Relationship of albumin quotient in individuals with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder

Takeaway

  • The myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-immunoglobulin-positive (MOG-IgG) group featured a higher proportion of abnormal albumin quotients than did the aquaporin-4-immunoglobulin-positive (AQP4-IgG) group.

Why this matters

The albumin quotient is often used as an indicator of blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability or dysfunction. In neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), a disrupted BBB allows leakage of pathogenic antibodies and inflammatory immune cells, which may be associated with the pathogenesis of the disease. Results from this study could help individuals with specific pathogenic antibodies access the necessary treatment.
